Return to In-house Programs main page. Competency Studies Competency: the values and behaviors that help to create consistently excellent and high quality results! The decision to undertake a Competency Study in a company usually flows from a need expressed by line managers to improve performance in a particular area of their organization. It might be expressed by statements such as: "We need to do a better job of selecting people for that function." Someone might observe: "We aren't supervising and evaluating people in that job carefully enough." In training activities, line managers might ask: "How do we know we are training these people in the right skills for the job?" Any of the above statements could lead to a decision to undertake a Competency Study. All of these are critical functions of management -- selecting the right people in the first place, managing them against a relevant set of competency criteria, and training those whose performance is lacking in the set of competencies and skills -- can benefit from a study which, at the outset, identifies what it takes to be successful in a specific job or function. LMA approaches Competency Studies in a variety of ways from developing a totally customized set relevant to your organization only or by utilizing existing competencies. The existing competencies can also be customized to better fit your organization. In order for the study to be effective an internal Task Force works with LMA consultants to help manage the project, help with the gathering and analysis of information, and finally to manage the feedback and implementation of the results.
