Resolving Conflict: The Key To Lasting Agreements
Manage Conflict, Achieve Resolution, Implement Agreements, Build Relationships

Why is conflict so challenging? It's challenging because there are fixed positions, turf wars, politics, egos, and conflicting priorities.

Resolving Conflict is also challenging because:

• You want to get what you want without harming the relationship.

• You want to avoid wasting time and energy being deadlocked.

• You want to be able to manage your own emotional reactions.

• You want to know enough to be able to take the next steps with the other party.

Resolving Conflict: The Key To Lasting Agreements approaches the art and science from three interrelated areas: creating a plan, developing strategies, and managing a process.

Creating a Plan

Develop a course of action by carefully planning for it ahead of time. By creating a plan, you will:

• Begin your meeting the right way.

• Analyze what you and the other party wants.

• Know what your resources are.

• Intuitively assess the motivations driving all parties.

• Determine who has the power.

• Understand how much trust there is.

• Consult with others and test your ideas.

• Determine an agreement range.

Developing a Strategy

Enhance your effectiveness by having solid strategy. You will:

• Determine if the meeting is cooperative, competitive, or adversarial.

• Use your strategy to guide the planning.

• Use strategies in practice meetings to understand how they work and if they work.

• Apply a strategy to your own situation.

Managing the Process

Reach agreement and implement that agreement by following a clear,
pragmatic conflict resolution process. You will:

• Maintain or build relationships.

• Keep your cool in even the hottest situations.

• Be able to resolve conflict with challenging people.

• Have a meeting where everybody wins.

The Objectives

The objectives of this program are to:

• Represent your position confidently when there is conflict.

• Strengthen your skills.

• Maintain the relationship while coming to agreement.

• Manage the process of conflict resolution to reach agreement and implement it.

• Be able to apply the tools in important on-the-job situations.

The Benefits

• Prepare more effectively to resolve conflict, which builds confidence.

• Strengthen actions that support coming to agreement, and change actions that get in the way.

• Enhance your style with different skills that enable you to be more flexible.

• Stay with your plan while dealing with conflicting demands and priorities.

• Implement agreements that last!
