Precious
by Mishtu Banerjee

Imagine you have just died while sleeping
and no one knows
you will not wake

Go to your child's bedroom
and watch as she breathes
the easy shifting of her rib cage

You reach and try to touch her
but she is like a ghost
and your hand passes through
her tangled hair

She sighs, "mommy"
and you say, "I am here"
she sighs "mommy"
and you know she does not hear

So you sing her a lullaby
believing even if she does not hear
it will somehow touch her
and she will carry your silent singing
like a kiss

If you wake tomorrow
remember what is precious
before you close your eyes
